AN INVESTIGATION INTO FACTORS INFLUENCING DROPOUT STUDENTSIN MEIKHTILA TOWNSHIP
Abstract
- Dropouts are defined as students who are enrolled in school at any time during the school year, but are not enrolled at the end of the school year and did not transfer, graduate, or die. Nowadays, the nation is facing a dropout crisis. To address this crisis requires a better understanding of why students drop out. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing dropout students in Meikhtila Township. The specific objectives of this study are to examine family factors influencing dropout students, to analyze school factors influencing dropout student, to investigate community factors influencing dropout students and to examine other factors influencing dropout students. Descriptive research design and survey method were used. The sample was formed of 500 dropout students (239 males and 261 females). The data were collected through dropout student questionnaire to find out factors influencing dropout students. According to descriptive statistics, all these family, school, community and other factors are affecting on dropout students. For more detail information, a Pearson chi-square test was conducted. Finally, the various reasons of dropping out of students responded on opened question were described. Based on the factors that affect on dropout students, discussions and suggestions were given in this study. In fact, understanding the factors influencing dropout students will lead to the prevention of dropout. Therefore, this result will be necessary for the youth’s development and will also be a profit for education progress.
