SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HYDROXYAPATITE EXTRACTED FROM THREE TYPES OF EGGSHELLS BY PRECIPITATION METHOD

Abstract
  • In this research, hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from three types’ eggshells (hen eggshells, quail eggshells, and duck eggshells) by using method of precipitation. Eggshells are a rich source of calcium carbonate, which corresponds to about 94% of the shell. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) from eggshells and orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) were used as precursor to produce hydroxyapatite (HAp). The major constituent calcium carbonate (CaCO3) three types’ eggshells powder were heated temperature at 1000C for 3h to obtain calcium oxide (CaO). The crystal structures, elemental concentrations of HAp powder were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) techniques. And then, crystal structures, crystallite sizes of HAp powder were calculated from XRD data results. The ratio values of the calcium (Ca) to phosphorous (P) were calculated from the EDXRF results. Finally, the analysis of HAp was discussed from the calculation of all above result data. The hydroxyapatite product from waste eggshells (hen eggshells, quail eggshells, and duck eggshells) can reduce environmental pollutions. Therefore, the HAp powder was prepared in this study. The obtained hydroxyapatite powder has great potential in biomedical applications.
