MOLECULAR DETECTION OF MULTIPLE DRUG RESISTANT KLEBSIELLA SPECIES FROM URBAN RUNOFF*

Abstract
  • Wastewaters from community drainages may be reservoirs for various bacterial strains harboring drug-resistant genes associated among healthcare and community. Among pathogenic bacteria, Klebsiella is an important human pathogen causing opportunistic nosocomial and community acquired infections. In the present study, Klebsiella pneumoniae was recorded with the confirmation of phenotypic and molecular analyses. The 16s rRNA gene of the selected isolate (MHBD 10-2(3)), collected from community drainage, Latha Township, was successfully amplified using PCR resulting in a sequence length of 996bp and comprehensive identification results using the phylogenetic analysis involved a comparison of the isolate’s sequence with others obtained from GeneBank database. The studied isolate revealed a close clustering with Klebsiella pneumoniae species, supported by 100% nucleotide identities. This study may highlight a rapid and cost-effective diagnostic tool for detection of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria in the natural environment.
