MYANMAR-THAILAND TRADE RELATIONS (2011-2020)

Abstract
  • Trade is one of the powerful pathways towards economic development for all countries. Growing bilateral trade increases the income levels of both countries, and then the countries become richer. Historically, Myanmar had a complicated relationship with neighbouring Thailand. With the democratization process of Myanmar, both countries have actively collaborated to promote bilateral trade. This study also intends to explore how trade relations between Myanmar and Thailand have contributed to normal trade and cross-border trade. It was conducted by a qualitative research method using both primary and secondary sources. The trade relationship contributed to economic prosperity by generating income, creating jobs, and fostering industrial development. It also became a source of border trade, migrant labour, natural gas, and some profitable Thailand investments in Myanmar. Thus, Myanmar-Thailand trade relations have resulted in a positive impact on the economic progress of both countries.
