THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERDEPENDENCE AND PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE IN A SOCIETAL CONTEXT*
Abstract
- In the face of increasing environmental crises and social discord, the principle of Mettā, or loving-kindness, emerges as a transformative approach to fostering ecological balance and global peace. This paper investigates the profound interconnections between Mettā and sustainable environmental practices, demonstrating that cultivating loving-kindness extends compassion not only to fellow humans but to all sentient beings and the natural world. The first section explores the concept of interdependence, emphasizing how Mettā nurtures awareness of the intricate relationships among individuals, communities, and ecosystems, inspiring ethical actions towards the environment. The second section highlights Mettā’s pivotal role in conflict resolution, particularly in addressing disputes over natural resources, and underscores the importance of compassionate dialogue in achieving mutual understanding and cooperation. Furthermore, the paper examines how Mettā can galvanize global solidarity, encouraging collective action for sustainability and environmental justice. By integrating loving-kindness into personal lifestyles and environmental policies, this study advocates for a sustainable future that honors the intrinsic value of all life, paving the way for harmonious coexistence between humanity and the natural world. Ultimately, the paper argues that Mettā serves as a foundational principle for cultivating ecological balance and global peace, offering a pathway to a more compassionate and sustainable society. The research employs descriptive, evaluative, and comparative methods to critically examine the sutta's teachings and assess their applicability in contemporary settings.
